Ever wondered what the work of the UN looks like? How the resolutions you might have heard about came to pass? What diplomats do when they meet in New York every year?

Become part of the Tübingen NMUN delegation and participate in one of the biggest UN simulations worldwide. We start preparations in October and you will be ready to change the world by the time we fly to New York City for the conference in March 2018. All that is required of you at the moment is to sign in to the two obligatory courses on Campus and show up to our first session on Oct 17th. After six months of hard preparation all our work payed off. Not only did the delegation win several awards, but we also had great fun participating in the numerous committees.

We enjoyed the cooperative atmosphere during the conference and the opportunity to visit the United Nations General Assembly Hall. We want to thank the Philippines Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York for having us. We got a tremendous insight in their work and through the knowledge we gained, we were able to represent the Philippines position even better.

Now NMUN 2017 is over and we all can look back with huge satisfaction on what each of our delegates achieved. We all had a great experience.

At this point, we want to thank all our supporters on our way to New York and especially Robin, Alex, and Bettina for their great guidance in our preparation.

This week our delegation traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, for four days. We had the great chance to visit some UN institutions relevant to our preparations for NMUN. The trip gave us huge insights into the work of real diplomats as well as of employees of the UN.

On our first day, we visited the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and we attended a guided tour through the Palais des Nations. Between these two appointments, three of us went to the small International Atomic Energy Agency office (IAEA) in Geneva, while the others had the opportunity to explore the city in the meantime.

On our second day, we went to the German Permanent Mission in Geneva, where we got real insights in the work of diplomats. The World Health Organization (WHO) was our next destination. After a strengthening meal in the WHO cafeteria, we heard two detailed presentations on the important work of the WHO. However, the most exiting appointment for all of us was the visit to the Philippine Consulate General in Geneva. Here we leaned one of the most important lessons in representing the Philippines in New York: always keep smiling!

To relax after the long day we went to the Lac de Genève where we enjoyed delicious cheese fondue. We are thanking all institutions we visited for having us; we had a great time in Geneva.

Agenda setting speeches, substantive statements, asserting oneself in negotiations and arguing for policy… NMUN challenges its participants in many ways, but it is plain to see that the biggest challenge is oratory. Therefore, Tübingen’s 2017 NMUN Delegation was grateful to attend a speech training session by Dr. Marco Behrmann of Cevey Consulting. After a short introduction to the theory basics, we had to give quasi-spontaneous statements on different topics. The performance itself was then subjected to a thorough feedback session.

The second exercise took into account the more comprehensive character of substantive speeches. Based on the research for our Landmark and our Position Papers we all had 10 minutes to prepare a speech. In this second speech, we had to react to different scenarios that can occur in New York – we were challenged to argue for particular measures, bridge cultural and political gaps or solve misunderstandings. Through the feedback, we all were able to improve on our performances.

What can the world do more about renewable and sustainable energy? Delegates from three universities: Hohenheim, Heidelberg and Tübingen met last Saturday to discuss about it.

Hosted in the beautiful Hohenheim castle, this year the Hohenheim Castle Model United Nations began with the preliminary agenda considering three topics:

1. Promoting Access to Renewable and Sustainable Energy for Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development
2. Protecting the Civil, Political, and Socioeconomic Rights of Refugees
3. Cyber Security and Protecting against Cyber Warfare

After a handful of excellent agenda setting speeches and an informal caucus, the delegates voted to address first the topic, Promoting Access to Renewable and Sustainable Energy for Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development.

There is no doubt all delegates had a long and hard day working together to find solutions. The hard work paid off! Four draft resolutions successfully passed. Decentralization, cooperation, technology transfer, awareness raising are some of the proposed solutions to address the issues of energy.

In addition to finding solutions for global problems, the delegates also improved their competence and skill in participating in a Model United Nations Simulation. It was the first time the current delegation of Tübingen attended a model UN after the first internal simulation. For some people it was the first time they worked with delegates they had never met before. However all the training that we did previously paid off. The cooperative spirit among all delegates was essential to make a successful UN model.

After the formal simulation, the Club of Hohenheim organized a wine-tasting event. This was a great opportunity for all participants to socialize with the other delegates. We enjoyed local wine, food and had a joyful Saturday evening together.

The Tübingen delegation would like to thank the Hohenheim university for hosting the United Nations model and the University of Heidelberg for joining us. We look forward to work again with you in the Tübingen Model United Nations in early February.

For the Tübingen delegation, perfect-timing means between the two deadlines for landmark documents and position papers, there was an expert talk. The expert was Ms. Athena Peralta, former Senior Economic Development Specialist at the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) of the Philippines. She came to Tübingen and shared with us her insider’s perspectives.

During the meeting, Ms. Peralta answered questions about the Philippines from the Tübingen delegates, covering various topics ranging from South-South cooperation, natural disaster, sustainable development programs to agriculture. Her opinions as a Filipino cleared up a lot of confusion during our prior research, thus helped us represent the Philippines better in the NMUN.

After the meeting, Ms. Penalta said that she was impressed with the substantive research on the Philippines that the Tübingen delegation had prepared. She believes that the Tübingen delegation will do well in the NMUN in New York City. Additionally, the meeting was an opportunity for her to reflect on her country as she is now working more on international issues in Geneva, Switzerland.

The first meeting of the Tübingen delegation in December welcomed some special guests: last-year delegates. Not only did they come to share experience, but also to challenge the 2017 delegation with a unique-but-necessary mission: dealing with unexpected and sensitive situations.

This challenge, called ’stress simulation‘, improved the delegates‘ understanding of the complexities of working in an international environment shaped by the values and norms of the United Nations. This simulation was informative and effective so that delegates can respond swiftly and positively in similar circumstances.

We would like to thank the former delegates for their time and insightful sharing. It’s been half of the preparation process for NMUN and we are getting more and more anticipated to cooperate with students from all over the world.

As it gets colder and colder it becomes obvious that winter has arrived. Nevertheless our delegation braved the cold and spent their days counting and surveying the visitors of this year’s Tübinger Schokomarkt. Some members of our delegates managed to dedicate up to 16 hours of their time over the six days – a great effort considering that we are all working on our Landmark Documents.

We would like to thank our delegates for their time and dedication this past week and encourage them to keep up the good work – the money we raised will help to pay for our trip to New York in March – so we are certain it was worth it. With the begin of the winter term the preparations for NMUN 2017 are starting. We are looking forward to six month of intense preparation, fruitful discussions and interesting events. Everything concludes in March with an exciting conference week in New York.

After five months of hard work and intense preparations, also the last members of the Tuebingen Delegation 2016 have safely arrived in New York City.

We are utterly excited to represent the Republic of Chile in nine different committees during the next five days, through closely collaborating with more than 2500 students from all over the world. Alongside our committee work, a diverse framework program awaits us, including workshops, opportunity fairs, socializing events, and much more.
